The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is the national competent authority responsible for exercising regulatory control over the safety of nuclear installations, radioactive waste, irradiated nuclear fuel and the mining and processing of radioactive ores and minerals. Any person wishing to site, construct, operate, decontaminate or decommission a nuclear installation must apply to the NNR for a nuclear authorisation. The NNR will hold a public hearing on 25 and 26 August 2021 to consider the Nuclear Installation Site Licence application made by Eskom Holdings SOC Limited for the Thyspunt Site.
