SELF-ASSESSMENT OF REGULATORY INFRASTRUCTURE

The NNR has completed the Lifecycle 1 of the Self-Assessment under IAEA project RAF/9/038 “Promoting Self-Assessment of Regulatory Infrastructures for Safety and Networking of Regulatory Bodies in Africa. Lifecycle 1 included the assessment of Core Modules and one Thematic Module in the Self-Assessment Tool (SAT), and national actions related to non-compliance to IAEA standards have been completed by the NNR. IAEA project RAF/9/049 “Sustaining the Regulatory Infrastructure for the Control of Radiation Sources is a continuation of RAF/9/038 through which the NNR is conducting  Lifecycle 2 of the Self-Assessment which utilizes a new IAEA tool which incorporates the latest IAEA standards.

The scope of the Lifecycle 2 includes the Core Modules and several Thematic Modules in the Self-Assessment of Regulatory Infrastructure for Safety (SARIS) tool. The NNR has completed the Response, Analysis and Action Planning for the SARIS Core Modules in 2013/14. The assessment of all relevant Thematic Modules will be completed by 2016, in time for the conduct of an IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) Mission.

Self-Assessment involves the Response to questions based on IAEA standards, Analysis of Responses, SWOT analysis, Recommendations and development of an Action Plan. NNR staff have been trained in the methodology and tools, and NNR teams are appointed to implement the different phases of Self-Assessment.
